A new campaigning political grouping designed to provide a “third way” for the people of Leicester was launched this week, called One Leicester. The group is on a mission to build a better tomorrow for Leicester and truly be the People’s Voice.
The Group aims to bring together all those who believe in the importance of a city that is based on uniting people from different backgrounds and faiths to create a prosperous city.
As well as aiming to empower the people of Leicester by giving them the space to make their voices heard, a true democracy.
True representation in politics requires honesty, trust, compassion and a desire to empower local people. One Leicester wants to show that there is a positive way in which we can do politics with authentic representation and the underpinning value of always putting the people of Leicester first.
Born after the recent City Council elections that were held in Leicester which resulted in a loss of 22 seats from Labour. They will work to bring the city together on a wide range of issues including: the green agenda, education, housing, community development and more.
The founder of the new group is Rita Patel, the former Assistant Mayor of Leicester who stood to be City Mayor in the recent election. Prior to being a Councillor for 12 years, she led the womens’ group Belgrave Baheno which created the Peepul Centre.
Patel said “our politics, not just in Leicester, but in the rest of the country is broken. Recently one of Westminster’s youngest MPs quit politics because she said Parliament was “toxic”. I can tell you, this isn’t just unique to Parliament.
Coming from different political strands we believe that it is important that we should have a new approach to politics in the city. One that is not party political based or structured in class based ideology, and not opposing everything that the others do. But one that is based on local issues designed to help local people. I believe very passionately that this is the way forward for our city.”
The first campaign supported by One Leicester is to work with other groups in support of a referendum on the mayoral system in Leicester. The grouping promises to be issue-based and open to all.
