In another blow to the Labour Party in Leicester, 20 more members have resigned. One of those members, Fizza Askari, is now standing for Leicester’s newest political party, One Leicester, in the upcoming Police & Crime Commissioner elections.
Since entering the political scene, One Leicester has garnered support from all corners of the city and country as communities become disaffected and disillusioned by mainstream political parties.
Fizza Askari’s candidacy in the upcoming PCC elections is the start of a new wave of local people representing local communities without the obligation to keep national party bosses happy.
Party Leader and former Assistant Mayor Rita Patel said “I believe Fizza will be a great PCC because she is a dedicated, knowledgable and hardworking woman who will be a strong local voice of the community.”
She continued “This is why we started One Leicester, to offer local people good representation that will listen to them. After a tough couple of years, we have to work on repairing the contract between our communities and the police. The existing PCC has not been able to do that and I’m afraid too many people have lost complete faith in the Labour Party.”
Fizza’s campaign focuses on 5 key pledges:
● More police officers on the beat
● A better contract between the community and police based on mutual respect
● More resources for crime prevention
● Better representation within the police force
● To fight for an end to the war in Gaza and bring those responsible to justice
On joining the race to be the next Leicestershire PCC, Fizza said “Policing in our county needs a rethink. We have incredible dedicated police officers in the constabulary but there’s a clear disconnect between them and the people they serve and protect.”
She added “I've decided to stand for One Leicester now because I have witnessed the horrors of what is happening in Gaza. I do not believe that any major political party can represent our communities any more. If good people don't stand for office, bad decisions are made.”
Since its inception, One Leicester has brought together all those who believe in the importance of a community that is based on uniting people from different backgrounds and faiths to create a prosperous city and county. As well as aiming to empower the people of Leicester and Leicestershire by giving them the space to make their voices heard, a true democracy.
The party wants to show a positive way in which we can do politics with authentic representation and the underpinning value of always putting the people first.
