Today (Saturday 25th May), One Leicester leader, Rita Patel announced that Cllr DianeCank has joined One Leicester to become their first elected councillor.
“I’m proud to welcome Diane to One Leicester and I know she will continue to be a strongadvocate for local people in and out of the Chamber. It is important for One Leicester tospeak up for local people and residents can expect Cllr Cank to continue to hold the localLabour leadership to account” said Mrs Patel.
Cllr Diane Cank, who has been a Councillor for Troon ward for the last 9 years, left theLabour Party in August last year and has been sitting as an Independent councillor.
On joining One Leicester, Cllr Cank said “It is clear to me that with a General Election on the horizon, local people need a credible choice on the ballot paper. I left the Labour Party because Keir Starmer and the local leadership stopped listening to local people and moved further away from the values and beliefs I hold true.”
She continued “One Leicester has a strong proposition for local people and I am strongly aligned with the party’s views on listening to local people, fighting for the hard-working people and doing politics more honestly and transparently.”
One Leicester’s first outing saw their Police & Crime Commissioner candidate, Fizza Askari, receive over 7,000 votes and push the Liberal Democrats into last place in the City.
